Building trust through strategic implementation of AI

Trust in AI is a business differentiator

At Brighterion we believe artificial intelligence that’s trustworthy, transparent and explainable is as important as AI that drives growth and efficiency. That’s especially true when using AI in fintech and healthcare. As part of the Mastercard family, our shared values include a strategic foundation on which to build our AI products and services. Mastercard’s Five pillars of AI was developed as an assurance to help customers adopt AI with confidence and to pass that trust onto their customers.

We believe AI can build a better world, one that protects and powers you and your customers, a world where AI is used for the greater economic good.

“The onus is on [organizations] to proactively demonstrate the responsible use of their technology to the world and to be prepared to explain and justify decisions made by those systems when required.”

Mastercard uses AI internally to help with scaling the business, increasing efficiencies and finding opportunities for revenue. These improvements benefit Mastercard customers in terms of functionality, efficiency and reliability.

AI keeps Mastercard servers running and transaction routing optimized. With a response time under 10 milliseconds and networks operating 99.9999% of the time, this extraordinary scalability enables Mastercard to process over 100 billion transactions a year. We don’t have downtime that causes issues like fraud slipping through or false declines as a result of our servers being overloaded. That means Brighterion’s AI is always there when our customers need it.

AI for good

AI for good

Giving back to the world is part of Mastercard’s DNA. AI for good is a vehicle for Mastercard to use its AI products to advance equitable economic growth.

“It’s been proven that having access to financial instruments can help people lift themselves out of poverty and progress at a much faster rate if they have access to bank accounts, credit and working capital,” says Rohit Chauhan, Executive Vice President, Artificial Intelligence at Mastercard.

Inclusive growth looks at all aspects of keeping a diverse, thriving economy. For example, Mastercard uses AI to assist communities in the U.S. with the highest school dropout rates, to help facilitate microloans to people in sub-continental India and dozens of other projects worldwide.

Ethical AI

Ethical AI

Ethical AI examines decisions that humans have never codified in technology. AI can analyze a million instructions in a split second to select the best outcome. But what are the ethics behind those decisions? What group of humans created the models, and how? And always underlying poor decisions is the fact that bad or unethical outcomes will be reflected directly onto the customer’s brand.

Ajay Bhalla, President, Cyber and Intelligence Solutions at Mastercard, is passionate about the balance between engendering trust in technology and fostering AI innovation. Bhalla believes it’s incumbent upon organizations to “proactively demonstrate the responsible use of their technology to the world and to be prepared to explain and justify decisions made by those systems when required.”

Sudhir Jha, Mastercard Executive Vice President and Head of Brighterion, sums up ethical AI quite simply: “Ethical AI is trustworthy, transparent, explainable, fair and just.”
